Wall remains, cultural monument

The former Premonstratensian convent of Mariaroth, whose history spans from approximately 1130 to 1802, was once a significant religious center in the Mayen-Koblenz region of Rhineland-Palatinate. Today, protected as a cultural monument, only a few remnants bear witness to its former presence, yet the convent's history is rich in events and transformations.

History+

The foundation of the convent of Rode, as it was originally known, is attributed to a Lord of Schöneck. Bishop Albero of Liège initially sent a Pater from Floreffe for pastoral care. This Pater later founded the Premonstratensian abbey of Rommersdorf, to which Mariaroth was subordinated. Despite a memorial endowment by Archbishop Balduin for the Luxembourgers in 1346, which included 54 other monasteries and convents, the convent in Mariaroth remained small. Feudal rights were claimed in 1231 by Knight Arnold von Dieblich. In 1574, a mistress and choir nuns from another unknown convent moved to Mariaroth, as only one inhabitant remained at that time. The convent buildings were destroyed during the Thirty Years' War, but a new manor house was erected in 1663. In the 18th century, the Archbishop of Trier briefly considered a merger of Mariaroth with Engelport Abbey. When the French invaded in 1794, the convent fled to Boppard, and the convent buildings were consumed by flames. The convent was finally dissolved in 1802.

Location+

The former convent of Mariaroth was situated in the Kondertal valley, near Waldesch, within the municipality of Dieblich on the Moselle. A current district of Dieblich bears the name of the destroyed convent, commemorating its former existence.

On site+

Today, only a few wall remnants of the former convent buildings are preserved. The three altars from 1768 and 1774, as well as Baroque figures of Saint Norbert and Saint Augustine, which once belonged to Mariaroth's inventory, are now located in the church of Niederfell.
