Margens

The earliest documented mention of Margens dates back to 1438, with the name derived from the given name Marge or Maring. Evidence suggests that an independent monastery may have existed here in the High Middle Ages. For instance, residents of surrounding villages were still required to perform services on the associated lands even after secularization. During excavation work, stones of monastic format were also discovered, and a 1589 map marks the site with a monastic symbol. It is presumed that it might have been a so-called poverty monastery, abandoned after a short period, before becoming an outwork of Marienkamp Monastery. Following the Reformation, Margens came into the possession of the rulers of Harlingerland and is now privately owned.

Margens is located in the municipality of Stedesdorf, which belongs to the collective municipality of Esens in the district of Wittmund, Lower Saxony. The region is characterized by the East Frisian coastal landscape.

The historic Margens farm is situated on a terp and is currently privately owned. Its structural remnants and historical significance are primarily of academic interest.
