Magdalenerinnen-, später Karmelitenkloster

The monastery was founded in 1227 by the Magdalenerinnen, also known as Reuerinnen. This community shaped the site for several centuries until they were forced to abandon their monastery in Würzburg in 1564 due to the Reformation. The vacant buildings were handed over to the Discalced Carmelites in 1627, who found a new home here. In 1669, the Baroque monastery church of St. Joseph and St. Maria Magdalena was consecrated, its design attributed to the North Italian architect Antonio Petrini. In the early 18th century, the monastery served as a study convent. A special feature during the secularization was that this Carmelite monastery, unlike many others, was not dissolved. This allowed the monastery to later become the starting point for the re-establishment of the Bavarian Carmelite province. Prior Cajetan Beckert played a central role in this. King Ludwig I officially confirmed the continued existence of the monastery in 1826. Renovations took place in 1908. During the bombing raids in March 1945, the monastery and its church were destroyed but rebuilt by 1950. The church received a provisional interior in 1958, which was extensively renewed from 1976 onwards.

The monastery is located in the city of Würzburg, which is situated in the federal state of Bavaria in Germany.

Today, the monastery houses the International Edith Stein Institute, which is dedicated to researching the work of the patron saint Edith Stein. It is protected as an architectural monument in Bavaria.
