History+
The necessity to protect Lübeck from external threats led over centuries to the expansion of the city's fortifications with walls and gates. Originally, three main gates secured access to the city: the Burgtor in the north, the Mühlentor in the south, and the Holstentor in the west. The Holstentor, as we know it today, is the former Middle Holstentor, whose construction began in 1464 under master builder Hinrich Helmstede and was completed in 1478. It was built on an artificially raised hill, which proved unstable, leading to a sinking of the south tower already during the construction phase. The financing of the construction was secured by a legacy from councilor Johann Broling amounting to 4,000 Lübeck marks. Over time, there were a total of four Holstentor gates, of which today's is the only one remaining.
