The ruins of Leighlinbridge Castle stand prominently on the River Barrow in Ireland's County Carlow. As the remains of a once strategically important fortification, it tells a story of a turbulent past and is now an accessible testament to medieval architecture.
History+
The castle's origins date back to the late 12th century. Historical records suggest that either Hugh de Lacy in 1180 or John de Clahull in 1181 had an initial fortress built here to secure the river crossing. However, the structures visible today largely date from the 14th century. In 1547, ownership passed to Edward Bellingham. A Carmelite monastery, founded nearby in 1270, added to the site's significance. A dark chapter for the castle occurred in 1650, when it was plundered by Cromwell's troops during the Irish Confederate Wars.
