Landkommende Altshausen

Residence, company headquarters

The Landkommende Altshausen, a former monastery of the Teutonic Order, is situated in Altshausen in the Ravensburg district, Baden-Württemberg. This historic site served for centuries as a significant center for the order in Upper Swabia.

History+

The Teutonic Order, initially established in 1190 as a field hospital in the Holy Land, evolved into a knightly order by 1198. Following the loss of the Crusader states, the order's Grand Master's seat moved from Venice to Marienburg, then to Königsberg. From 1525 onwards, Lutheran and Reformed bailiwicks also emerged, and the Grand Master's seat was relocated to Bad Mergentheim before moving to Vienna in 2010. In 1264, the Teutonic Order acquired property in Altshausen, succeeding Heinrich von Bigenburg. Altshausen Castle became the focal point of their dominion. Over the subsequent two centuries, the order successfully established a consolidated territory around Altshausen. From 1440, the Landkomtur of the Teutonic Order's Bailiwick of Swabia-Alsace-Burgundy resided in Altshausen. In the 18th century, the order commenced construction of an extensive Baroque palace, which remained unfinished. The Altshausen Commandery was considered the wealthiest within its bailiwick until its dissolution in 1806.
