Løvenholm Slot (Castle)

The first documented mention of the site dates back to 1445, when the Order of St. John monastery in Viborg transferred the estate to the Benedictine monks of Essenbæk Monastery. After the Reformation, the property was confiscated by the Danish Crown and passed to Reichsmarschall Erik Eriksen Banner, who had the east wing and the northern corner tower built in 1576. Later, Eske Brock acquired the estate before it came into the possession of the Holstein Rantzau family in 1609. Under the Rantzaus, who built the south tower in 1642, the castle received its current name Løvenholm in 1647, derived from the golden lion in their coat of arms. The Rantzau era ended tragically in 1721 with the murder of Christian Detlef zu Rantzau, after which the property reverted to the Crown and later passed to Count Frederik Danneskiold-Samsoe. In the late 1920s, Waldemar Uttental, who also owned Gammel Estrup, acquired the castle and harbored plans for a school.

Løvenholm Castle is situated in Auning, in the Norddjurs district of the Midtjylland (Central Jutland) region in Denmark, at an elevation of approximately 19 meters above sea level.

Today, Løvenholm Castle serves as a school and is utilized for educational and research purposes in agriculture and forestry.
