Ravensbrück concentration camp
Ravensbrück Concentration Camp, a site of immense historical significance, was the largest SS concentration camp for female prisoners in the German Reich. Located in Fürstenberg an der Havel, approximately 100 kilometers north of Berlin, it now serves as a memorial and remembrance site.
History+
The construction of Ravensbrück camp began in December 1938 under the command of Reichsführer-SS Heinrich Himmler, with prisoners from Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp used for its construction. Originally designed as a women's-only camp, the first female prisoners from Lichtenburg Concentration Camp were transferred here in May 1939. A separate men's camp was added in April 1941, and by June 1942, the Uckermark Youth Protection Camp for female adolescents was established in close proximity. The camp steadily grew, covering an area of approximately 170 hectares with up to 70 subcamps by 1945. During World War II, women from all over Europe were imprisoned here and forced into labor, often for the armaments industry. Medical experiments were also conducted on prisoners within the camp. Towards the end of the war, in April 1945, the camp was evacuated by the SS, and its inmates were forced on a death march. On April 30, 1945, Soviet troops liberated the remaining prisoners.
