Mittelbau-Dora Concentration Camp
The Mittelbau-Dora concentration camp, also known as Dora-Mittelbau, was one of the largest underground armaments factories of World War II and a place of unimaginable suffering. It was built on the southern slope of the Kohnstein near Nordhausen in Thuringia and served for the production of "retaliation weapons" such as the V2 rocket. Today, it is a memorial site that commemorates the atrocities and invites visitors to reflect.
History+
The camp was established on August 28, 1943, as an subcamp of Buchenwald concentration camp under the codename Arbeitslager Dora. Prisoners were primarily used for tunnel construction and the underground production facilities of Mittelwerk GmbH, where V1 and V2 rockets were manufactured. In October 1944, it was elevated to an independent concentration camp and eventually comprised nearly 40 subcamps. During its 18-month existence, approximately 60,000 prisoners from 21 nations passed through the camp complex; 20,000 of them died under inhumane conditions. The liberation by the US Army took place on April 11, 1945.
