Künßberg Castle

The castle estates of the city of Kulmbach are fortified buildings dating back to the Middle Ages. The castle estates initially served to provide relatively comfortable accommodation for prominent local noble families who defended the city of Kulmbach and Plassenburg in times of war. Later, the representative character of the buildings predominated, and they also passed into bourgeois and municipal ownership.

The current appearance as a "small castle" is due to the design of the facade by the Saltzmann family in 1553, who originally came from Nuremberg. The property with Plassenburg in the background is one of the most popular motifs for local artists. In common parlance, the name "Künsberger Schlösschen" has become established, although this is due to a confusion of the Künsberg family with the Saltzmann family. For the same reasons, the coat of arms above the entrance portal was restored with incorrect tinctures. Today, the Kulmbach Urban Development Administration can be found there.
