Crusader Castle Le Destroit

The remains of the Castle can be visited

The Crusader castle Le Destroit, once a strategically important fortress, rises near the present-day village of Atlit in Israel. Its history is closely linked to the Crusades and bears witness to the military presence in this region.

History+

The origins of Le Destroit fortress date back to the early 12th century, when Crusaders from the Kingdom of Jerusalem erected this complex no later than 1103 on the remains of an older structure. During the 12th century, the castle came into the possession of the powerful Knights Templar. However, its importance diminished when the order built a much larger and stronger fortress, Château Pèlerin, in close proximity to the Mediterranean Sea around 1218 during the Fifth Crusade. Le Destroit was finally destroyed by the Mamluks around 1264.

Location+

Le Destroit is located near Atlit in the Haifa District, within the Haifa region of Israel. The ruin stands at an elevation of approximately 15 meters above sea level.
