On the southern edge of the modern city of Ashdod, directly on the sandy beach of the Mediterranean Sea, stands the Crusader castle Chastel Béroard. This historic fortress, whose origins date back to the 10th century, bears witness to the eventful history of the region and today offers an impressive ruin landscape.
History+
Archaeological findings suggest that the fortress was built as early as the 10th century by Muslims, likely the Fatimids. Its first documented mention occurred in October 1106, when King Baldwin I of Jerusalem stayed there. Despite its proximity to the powerful Fatimid fortress of Ascalon, which was only about 15 km away, Chastel Béroard initially seems to have played no significant role in containing the Fatimid sphere of influence. Only after the Crusaders conquered Ascalon in 1153 did the castle serve to secure the important road between Ibelin and Ascalon. In 1169, a Nicolaus de Beroard is mentioned as a possible castellan of the castle, belonging to the knights of Hugh of Ibelin, Lord of Ramla.
