Klisurski Monastery (Клисурски манастир)

The Klisura Monastery, a significant sacred building, is nestled in the picturesque landscape of Bulgaria near the town of Varshets. It is characterized by its long history and its role as a spiritual center.
History+
The origins of the Klisura Monastery date back to the first half of the 13th century, when it was known as the Vreshtitsa Monastery, named after its location in the valley of the Vreshtitsa River. Over the centuries, the monastery suffered repeated destructions and looting but was always rebuilt. A particularly intensive restoration phase began in the mid-19th century, funded by local donations. Archimandrite Antim Damyanov from Berkovitsa led these works and in 1869 built the monastery church and later the chapel “Sveti Nikola”. Between 1887 and 1890, the chapel “St. St. Cyril and Method” was constructed, creating a comprehensive monastic complex with churches and economic buildings. The new main church was consecrated in 1891 by the Metropolitan of Vidin. The monastery played an important role in promoting the Bulgarian Enlightenment and the spread of literacy to strengthen Christianity. After Bulgaria's liberation in 1878, the main church underwent restoration between 1936 and 1937, with masters from Samokov creating the iconostasis. A spring, believed to have healing properties, is also located in the monastery courtyard.
