The origins of the monastery date back to approximately 695 when it was founded. It was dedicated to Saints Peter and Suitbertus. For many centuries, the foundation shaped the spiritual and cultural life in the region. In the course of secularization, the Collegiate Foundation was dissolved in 1803, bringing an end to its monastic function.
