Kollegiatstift Bad Grönenbach

The Collegiate Church was founded in 1479. Dedicated to Saints Philipp and Jakob, it was established for twelve canons who elected a dean from their ranks. However, the initially planned number of twelve canons was rarely reached. In 1525, the canons sought refuge in Kempten during the peasant uprisings. A fire destroyed the collegiate church in 1572, but it was rebuilt in the following years. The religious schism in Grönenbach from 1559 led to a division of the collegiate church's revenues between the denominations. Emperor Rudolph II granted a conservatory in 1602 to preserve the collegiate church after the Reformation. In 1692, the Collegiate Church, granted as a fief, reverted to Rupert von Bodman, Prince-Abbot of Kempten. In the course of the Bavarian secularization, the Collegiate Church of St. Philipp was dissolved in 1804.

The historic collegiate church building is now a protected monument and serves as the rectory for the Roman Catholic parish in Bad Grönenbach. It is a three-story building with a gable roof, featuring a coat of arms of the founding couple from the 15th century on its west side. The ground floor houses a two-aisled hall with a cross-ribbed vault, supported by round central pillars. The first floor has a 16th-century wooden ceiling, while the second floor features an 18th-century stucco ceiling. Inside, several paintings from the former Catholic church of St. Martin in Woringen are displayed.
