Kollegiatstift St. Moritz

The Collegiate Church of St. Moritz in Augsburg, Bavaria, was a significant spiritual institution that shaped the religious and cultural life of the city for centuries. It was among the oldest and most influential collegiate churches in the region.
History+
The collegiate church was founded in 1020 by Augsburg's Bishop Bruno, a brother of Emperor Henry II. This established St. Moritz as the fourth spiritual community in Augsburg. Soon after its inception, the associated collegiate church received parochial duties, serving the area between the churches of St. Ulrich and Afra, Perlach, and the Cathedral. In 1178, the collegiate church gained the right to freely elect its provost, solidifying its independence from the cathedral chapter. From the 12th century onwards, St. Moritz maintained a public Latin school. The Fugger family secured the collegiate church's continued existence during the Reformation in 1518 by acquiring the church patronage and establishing a prebendary foundation. The collegiate church was dissolved in 1802 as part of the secularization. At that time, the convent comprised 20 members.
