Kollegiatstift St. Martin

Tradition holds that Saint Martin was once imprisoned in Worms, then Civitas Vangionum, for refusing military service. This event is recorded in the Saint's Vita by Sulpicius Severus. A predecessor church to the current St. Martin's Church existed before the year 900. The presumed dungeon of Saint Martin was revered as a place of devotion until the destruction of Worms in 1689. The Collegiate Church of St. Martin itself, a community of twelve secular canons led by a dean, was founded towards the end of the first millennium. Although a forged document by King Otto III from 991 exists, the year 996 is often assumed as the founding year, confirmed by a genuine document from Emperor Henry VI in 1196 concerning possessions in Boppard. The first confirmed documentary mention dates from 1016, and Bishop Burchard I is said to have established the monastery around this time. In 1210, the parish of St. Lambertus was incorporated into the collegiate church, with St. Martin's Church serving as the collegiate and pilgrimage church and St. Lambert's Church as the parish church. Both churches were structurally connected. After the destruction of Worms in the War of the Palatine Succession in 1689, which severely damaged the collegiate church, reconstruction took place with Baroque elements. The collegiate church was finally dissolved in 1802.

The former Collegiate Church of St. Martin is located in the city of Worms in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany.

St. Martin's Church, which once belonged to the collegiate church, is still preserved today. The former collegiate buildings and cloister were located north of the church, while St. Lambert's Church stood to the south, its remains demolished at the end of the 18th century. The St. Martin's dungeon also no longer exists; its former entrance is now marked by a low arch in the outer masonry.
