St. Johann

The origins of the collegiate church trace back to a St. John's Church founded by Bishop Konrad in the 10th century. In 1266, it was re-established as a collegiate church with the dual patronage of John the Baptist and John the Evangelist, with a Gothic long choir added to the existing nave. In the early 14th century, the collegiate church acquired extensive property in and around Constance as well as in the adjacent regions. The Constance Cathedral Chapter considered St. John's as one of its subsidiary collegiate churches, which repeatedly led to disputes. After a period of decline in the 14th century, a three-aisled pillar basilica was built at the beginning of the 15th century, completed in 1434 with the erection of the tower. The Reformation in Constance originated in the collegiate church, leading to the destruction of the church interior in 1530. Following re-Catholicization from 1550, the collegiate church experienced a renewed upswing after the Thirty Years' War. In the course of secularization, the collegiate church was dissolved in 1807, the parish abolished in 1813, and the church desecrated in 1816. The tower was demolished in 1830.

The Collegiate Church of St. John is located in the city of Constance in the federal state of Baden-Württemberg, Germany, at an elevation of approximately 407 meters above sea level.

After its desecration in 1816, the building was used for various secular purposes from 1818 onwards, including as a brewery, restaurant, and hotel. Today, the former nave houses a co-working space, and the former choir contains two restaurants. Additionally, a ballet school and other facilities, as well as small apartments, are located in the attic floors.
