Kollegiatstift, später Benediktinerkloster Reinhausen

Cultural monument

The former collegiate church, later Benedictine monastery of Reinhausen, is located south of Göttingen in Lower Saxony, Germany. This site, now protected as a cultural monument, boasts a rich history, from its foundation by an aristocratic family to its transformation into a Benedictine monastery and eventual dissolution during the Reformation.

History+

The origins of Reinhausen Monastery lie in a collegiate church founded around 1079 by the Counts Konrad, Heinrich, and Hermann (III.) of Reinhausen, along with their sister Mathilde. They dedicated the site to the Trinity, Mary, and Saint Christopher, endowing it with four canons and a provost. The comital family subsequently moved their ancestral seat to the newly constructed castles on the Gleichen. Following the provost's death and with the consent of his co-heirs, Count Hermann transformed the collegiate church into a Benedictine monastery. He transferred his possessions in the village to the church and allowed his people to join the monastery. Reinhard was elected and consecrated as the first abbot. In the 15th century, the abbey underwent a reform and joined the Bursfelde Congregation, which was reflected, among other things, in the construction of a hospital in 1460. The Reformation led to its conversion into a Lutheran monastery from 1542 onwards. Monastic life definitively ceased in the late 16th century with the death of the last abbot.
