Sülte

The foundation of the monastery in 1029 is attributed to Bishop Godehard of Hildesheim, who established a chapel dedicated to the Apostle Bartholomew and a pilgrim hospital at a salt spring. This site, known as Sülte, was, according to legend, a place of eerie phenomena that Godehard ended with the establishment of the Bartholomäus Foundation. The monastic church, which evolved from the first chapel, was consecrated in 1034. Bishop Bruning later transformed the foundation into a monastery for Augustinian Canons Regular. In 1440, the convent was reformed by Johannes Busch, who from this location reformed other monasteries. The monastery suffered destruction during the Reformation in 1556 and again during the Thirty Years' War. Its final dissolution occurred in 1803 during secularization. Today, only foundations of the former monastic buildings remain.

The former monastery is located in Hildesheim, a city in Lower Saxony, Germany. At the time of its founding, it was situated to the east, just outside the Ostertor, beyond the then-existing city walls.

The current buildings on the former monastery grounds originate from a psychiatric institution that opened in 1849. After the clinic relocated in 1976, the building stood vacant until it was converted into a conference hotel in 2000, which is now operated as a Novotel Hotel.
