Kollegiatstift Neumünster Abbey

The origins of Neumünster likely date back to the 8th century, when Bishop Megingaud of Würzburg erected a memorial building on this site, commemorating the martyrdom of the Franconian apostles Kilian, Kolonat, and Totnan. Bishop Burkard and later Megingaud himself were buried here. The oldest monumental inscription in Franconia after the Roman era can be found on Megingaud's sarcophagus lid in the crypt. In 1057, Bishop Adalbero of Würzburg founded the collegiate church of Neumünster, dedicated to John the Evangelist. The monastery was dissolved in 1803 during the secularization in Bavaria, and the church became state property. After a period of use as an ammunition depot, the Brotherhood of the Cross returned in 1821. Since 1908, Neumünster has functioned as a Catholic parish church. The church suffered severe damage during World War II but was rebuilt and served as the episcopal church of the Diocese of Würzburg from 1950 to 1967.

Today, Neumünster is a Catholic parish church dedicated to John the Evangelist and John the Baptist. The originally Romanesque basilica underwent Baroque transformations over the centuries, notably with the construction of a dome and an ornate Baroque facade in the early 18th century. Inside, significant artworks are preserved, including the Riemenschneider Madonna and the tomb of Johannes Trithemius. Copies of Tilman Riemenschneider's busts of the Franconian apostles, whose originals were destroyed in 1945, are now displayed behind the altar table.
