Kollegiatstift Neuessing Abbey
The former Collegiate Church of Neuessing, a historic monastery in Kelheim, Bavaria, Germany, is distinguished by its long history and its connection to the regional noble family of Abensberg. It is picturesquely situated at the southern entrance to the Lower Market and comprises a complex of buildings including a church, a collegiate house, a deanery, and an infirmary.
History+
The Collegiate Church of Neuessing was founded in 1367 and dedicated to the Holy Spirit. The foundation was established by Ulrich the Elder of Abensberg and his sons on their hereditary property below Veste Randeck. Originally, it was designed for six canons and twelve infirm, with the canons also serving the parishes of Altessing and Prunn. However, financial difficulties and the loss of income sources during the Reformation prevented the collegiate church from flourishing. From 1610, the canonries were vacant, and ultimately only the collegiate dean resided in the monastery. In 1672, the collegiate church came under the control of the Ingolstadt Jesuits, and after their suppression in 1782, it passed to the Order of Malta. As part of the secularization in Bavaria, the Collegiate Church of Neuessing was dissolved in 1796.
