Stiftskirche Enger

In 947, Queen Mathilde founded a collegiate foundation for secular canons in Enger, initially dedicated to Mary and Saint Lawrence. King Otto I endowed the foundation with extensive lands and privileges. After Mathilde's death in 968, Otto placed the foundation under the Archbishopric of Magdeburg, causing it to lose its original independence. Over time, the patronage was extended to include Saint Dionysius, whose relics Otto I provided to the foundation. Due to warlike conflicts and raids, the foundation was relocated to Herford in 1414, where St. Johannis Church became the new collegiate church. The Reformation took hold in the foundation from 1530 onwards, and it was finally dissolved in 1810. The former collegiate church in Enger now serves as an Evangelical-Lutheran parish church.

The former collegiate foundation is located in Herford, a city in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. The complex is situated at an elevation of approximately 101 meters above sea level.

The original collegiate church in Enger is now used as an Evangelical-Lutheran parish church. Although no other foundation buildings apart from the church remain, the former residences of the canons around the church, known as the Kirchenrundling, continue to shape the townscape to this day.
