History+
At the site of the current palace, a court residence of the Burgundians and Habsburgs once stood on the Koudenberg, which was destroyed by fire in 1731. Subsequently, a smaller residence was built. In 1815, William I, King of the Netherlands, decided to expand the existing four houses into a royal palace, completed in 1829. After Belgian independence in 1830, King Leopold I chose this palace as his residence. His successor, Leopold II, shaped the current Neo-Baroque appearance of the castle, with its transformation completed in 1903. Until the death of Queen Astrid in 1935, the palace served as the residence of the Belgian royal family, before King Leopold III moved to Laeken Castle.
