The monastery ruin of Wörschweiler is a former Cistercian abbey located in the Saar-Pfalz-Kreis in Saarland, Germany. Situated on a ridge above the village of Wörschweiler, the complex was dedicated to the Virgin Mary.

History+

The monastery of Wörschweiler was established around 1171/1172. Initially conceived as a Benedictine monastery, it was later taken over by Cistercian monks and became a daughter monastery of the Lotharingian abbey of Villers-Bettnach. During the 16th century, the monastery experienced a decline and was eventually secularized in 1558 as part of the Reformation. A fire destroyed the complex in 1614, though the economic buildings were reused from 1662 onwards. Extensive excavation and preservation work to uncover the ruins took place in the late 19th and mid-20th centuries.
