The Tautra Abbey Ruin is a significant testament to medieval sacred architecture in Norway. Located on the island of Tautra in the municipality of Frosta, in the heart of the Trondheimsfjord, the complex offers a fascinating glimpse into former monastic life and Cistercian building art.
History+
The foundation of Tautra Abbey took place in 1207 by monks from Lysekloster near Bergen, which in turn was a daughter foundation of the English Fountains Abbey. As early as 1254, the complex was severely damaged by fire. The end of its independence as an abbey came in 1532 with the appointment of Niel Lykke as abbot. In the course of the Reformation, the monastery was confiscated by the crown in 1537. In 1846, the Norwegian Society for the Preservation of Ancient Monuments acquired the ruin to secure it and conducted initial excavations in 1879.
