Klosteruine Seligenstatt

Ruin, cultural monument

The monastery ruin of Seligenstatt, a former Benedictine convent, is situated in the Westerwald district in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. Of the original complex, only a few walls remain today, which are protected as a cultural monument and form a monument zone.

History+

The foundation of Seligenstatt Monastery, dedicated to the Mother of God and Saint Nicholas, is attributed to Siegfried von Runkel, though the exact year of its establishment is unknown. Its first documented mention dates to 1181, when the monastery was gifted to the Archdiocese of Trier. In 1215, it is listed as a daughter monastery of Maria Laach Abbey. In the same year, the nuns exchanged a mill in Hadamar, which remained unused due to its distance, for a payment to Eberbach Abbey. Limited financial resources led Archbishop Theodorich II of Trier to cap the number of nuns at 30 in 1239 to prevent the monastery from being overburdened. This directive was reiterated in 1324. Siegfried von Runkel freed the monastery from all vogt rights in 1219 before embarking on a crusade. The monastery's possessions, which increased through donations in the 13th and 14th centuries, were widely scattered across several present-day districts. Unfavorable economic management contributed to the deterioration of its situation. After 1423, the last mention of a convent of nuns, the monastery was dissolved between 1432 and 1440.
