Hovedøya Abbey (Ruin)

The Hovedøya Monastery was founded in 1147. It originated as a daughter monastery of Kirkstead Abbey in England, an abbey that in turn descended from Fountains Abbey. Bishop Viljam of Oslo endowed the monastery, and the first abbot, Philippus, also came from England. The existing church on the island was dedicated to Saints Edmund and Mary. The monastery, which housed about twelve monks and lay brothers, achieved considerable prosperity and owned extensive lands, including areas that are now part of Oslo's districts of Bygdøy, Bogstad, Frogner, and Ullern. The monks were also known for their advanced agricultural methods, which they developed through their own experiments. In 1532, the monastery was confiscated by the Crown and set on fire. Subsequently, it served as a quarry for the construction of Akershus Fortress.

The monastery ruin of Hovedøya is located on Hovedøya island, which belongs to the city of Oslo in the district of Oslo in the Østlandet region of Norway. It is situated at an elevation of approximately 19 meters above sea level.

Today, the Hovedøya monastery ruin is accessible to visitors and can be explored. Although only the foundations of the monastic buildings remain, the original layout of the Cistercian abbey can still be clearly recognized. Fragments of 13th-century stained glass and church flooring found here are now exhibited in the Historical Museum of Oslo.
