Arnoldstein Abbey

The monastery ruin of Arnoldstein, a former Benedictine monastery, is located in Carinthia, Austria. The complex, which is now a protected monument, bears witness to a long and eventful history, ranging from its foundation in the early 12th century to its dissolution in the late 18th century.
History+
The origins of the site date back to the late 11th century, when Arnoldstein Castle was first mentioned in documents. Bishop Otto of Bamberg founded a Benedictine monastery here in 1106/1107 to secure the bishopric's property. The existing castle was converted into convent buildings for this purpose. The monastery, dedicated to Saint George and the Mother of God Mary, faced repeated challenges throughout its history. These included crop failures, a locust invasion, and particularly the devastating earthquake of 1348, which triggered a landslide from the Dobratsch and buried large parts of the monastery's property. Despite reconstruction efforts and donations, the monastery struggled with economic difficulties. In the 16th century, during the Reformation, the monastery was on the verge of ruin, as it faced financial problems, neglect of pastoral duties, and conflicts with nobility and subjects. The monastery was finally dissolved and secularized in 1782.
