The monastery of Belgern was founded in 1258. It was inhabited by monks of the Cistercian order who settled in this region. Over the centuries, the monastery shaped the spiritual and economic life of the surrounding area. In the course of the Reformation, the monastery was dissolved and secularized in 1541, thus ending its existence as a religious institution.
