Klostergut Reinshof

Experimental farm

The Reinshof Monastery Estate, a historical cultural monument in southern Lower Saxony, is situated in the Leine Valley near Göttingen. It embodies a long history of agricultural use and is now an important site for research and education.

History+

The origins of Reinshof date back to between 500 and 800 AD, when a settlement named Reynholdeshusen emerged. Over the centuries, the Augustinian nunnery in Weende acquired increasing property in this area, including lands and a mill donated by the Archbishops of Mainz. By the 14th century, Reynholdeshusen was referred to as a farm, evolving into an outwork of the Weende monastery. In 1448, Reinshof was an indirect administrative village of the Friedland district. Though temporarily pledged to the city of Göttingen, it was redeemed in 1561 by Duke Erich II of Calenberg-Göttingen. From 1890 to 1980, the Reinshof Monastery Estate was managed as an independent operation. Since 1980, it has served the Georg-August University of Göttingen as an experimental farm for agricultural economics and technology.
