Kloster Zimmern

The Cistercian convent was originally founded in 1233 in Windsfeld by Friedrich von Truhendingen and his wife Agnes. In 1245, the convent was first moved to Stahelsberg. The final relocation to Zimmern in the fertile Nördlinger Ries took place in 1252, made possible by a donation from Rudolf I. von Hürnheim-Rauhhaus. The monastery quickly developed and acquired extensive property, as evidenced by the purchase of half of the village of Pfäfflingen in 1279. In the 14th century, the Counts of Oettingen took over the Vogtship of Zimmern. With the Reformation starting in 1522, the monastery adopted Lutheran teachings and separated from its father abbot in Kaisheim. After a brief re-settlement following the Schmalkaldic War, the monastery was finally dissolved by the Counts of Oettingen in 1558. The monastic property was later administered by the Princes of Oettingen-Oettingen and subsequently by Oettingen-Wallerstein.

Kloster Zimmern is located in the Donau-Ries district in Bavaria, Germany. It is situated in the municipality of Deiningen, a region known for its fertile soils.

The remains of the former Gothic monastery church are still preserved today and are occasionally used by the Protestant parish of Deiningen for services. Most of the original interior furnishings are no longer present. The property was acquired in 2000 by the Twelve Tribes religious community, which sold it to a private buyer in 2017.
