Zeven Abbey

The origins of Zeven Monastery date back to approximately 961, when a canonesses' collegiate church was founded in Heeslingen. This collegiate church was relocated to Zeven around 1141 and transformed into a Benedictine nunnery. The relocation took place under Archbishop Adalbero of Bremen to counteract the prevailing indiscipline in Heeslingen and to create a more secluded place for monastic observance. The move was accompanied by the adoption of the Benedictine Rule. Zeven Monastery was dissolved in 1647 as part of the secularization.

Zeven Monastery is situated in the small town of Zeven, which is part of the Rotenburg (Wümme) district in Lower Saxony, Germany. The complex is located at an elevation of approximately 20 meters above sea level on the elevated right bank of the Mehde river.

Of the former monastic complex, the church dedicated to Saint Vitus and a building that now houses the Zeven Monastery Museum, documenting the history of the institution, are still preserved today.
