Zehdenick Abbey
The Zehdenick Monastery, a historic Cistercian nunnery, is located in the Oberhavel region of Brandenburg, Germany. It stands as a significant testament to medieval monastic culture and has a rich and varied history that extends to the present day.
History+
The founding of Zehdenick Monastery is believed to have occurred around 1250, though the exact founding charter has not been preserved. It was established for Cistercian nuns and was dedicated to Saint Mary, Saint George, and later also to the Holy Cross. Pope Alexander IV confirmed the foundation in 1254. With the advent of the Reformation in 1541, it was converted into an evangelical convent for noblewomen. During the Thirty Years' War, the monastery buildings suffered extensive damage, but parts of the complex survived. The monastery was finally dissolved in 1971.
