Kloster Worbis

The Cistercian convent of St. Petrus in Worbis was founded in 1311 by Friedrich, Count of Beichlingen, near the existing St. Petri Church. Nuns from the convents of Beuren and Anrode settled the new establishment, and Bertradis was its first abbess. Over time, the convent acquired various properties, including land, a mill, and fish ponds. In the 15th century, the convent faced difficulties that led to visitations. As a rather poor institution, it requested permission to collect alms in 1521. During the Peasants' War in 1525, the convent was destroyed and officially dissolved in 1540. In 1667, it was re-established by Franciscans. After extensive renovation work from 1668 to 1670, the monastery church of St. Antonius was consecrated in 1678. This church, a jewel of the Eichsfeld, was redesigned in the Baroque style in 1765. From 1670, the monastery also served to train ordained priests. Many padres supported the surrounding villages as chaplains. With Prussia's takeover of the Eichsfeld, the monastery was finally dissolved in 1824. The monastery church became the property of the Catholic parish of Worbis. From 1838 to 1848, the buildings housed a forced labor institution, which was closed due to the March Unrests. Later, from 1863 to 1994, the buildings housed the Worbis district court.

Worbis Monastery is located in the town of Worbis in the Eichsfeld, a region in northern Thuringia, Germany.

Of the original medieval monastery buildings, only remnants of the cloister and the well house remain today. The former monastery church of St. Antonius continues to serve the Catholic parish of Worbis and is the destination of an Antonius pilgrimage every June. After extensive renovation work, parts of the Leinefelde-Worbis city administration are scheduled to move into the buildings.
