The founding of Wienhausen Abbey took place around the year 1221. It was established as a Cistercian nunnery and dedicated to Saints Mary, Alexander, and Lawrence. Over the centuries, the convent developed and maintained its spiritual tradition. Even after the Reformation, the abbey continued to exist and is still run today as an Evangelical convent for women.

Today, the abbey presents itself with a largely preserved historical complex. This includes the church, a watermill, farm buildings, and the convent buildings with a two-story cloister in the Brick Gothic style. The church consists of a Romanesque archdeaconry church and a Gothic abbey church built to its west, featuring a nuns' choir with walls and ceiling adorned with biblical paintings. A textile and tapestry museum is housed within the abbey, showcasing a collection of Gothic tapestries from the 14th and 15th centuries, as well as other historical artifacts. Guided tours of the premises are available.
