Wennigsen Abbey

The foundation of Kloster Wennigsen is estimated to be around the year 1200. It is believed that Count Bernhard von Poppenburg provided land, which Bishop Konrad I von Rüdenberg used to establish an Augustinian nunnery. The first documented mention occurred in 1224, when Count Adolf III relinquished his advowson rights in favor of the bishop. Over time, the monastery received numerous endowments from noble families in the region. Between 1261 and 1284, Wennigsen was a place of pilgrimage, with its statue of Mary being walled up during the Reformation and only rediscovered in 1908. In 1455, the monastery was reformed by Johannes Busch. After 1542, Duchess Elisabeth von Calenberg-Göttingen introduced the Reformation, transforming the monastery into a noble ladies' foundation. During the Thirty Years' War, the monastery suffered severe damage and was plundered, with reconstruction only partially occurring in the 18th century. The current Baroque monastery buildings were constructed between 1707 and 1725. The monastery is dedicated to Saints Mary and Peter and continues to exist today.

Kloster Wennigsen is located in the Hanover Region in Lower Saxony, Germany, at an elevation of approximately 88 m above sea level.

Today, Kloster Wennigsen remains an Evangelical women's convent. Since 2002, it has housed “Das Haus für Stille und Begegnung” – Via Cordis, offering contemplative meditation courses and individual retreats. Temporarily, Haus Inspiratio of the Evangelical-Lutheran Church of Hanover is also accommodated in a part of the monastery.
