Volkenroda Abbey

Volkenroda Abbey was founded in 1131 by Cistercian monks from Altenkamp on the foundations of a former imperial palace. The abbey church, dedicated to Saints Mary and Benedict, was consecrated as early as 1150. From its inception, the monastery was endowed with extensive landholdings and developed into one of the wealthiest and most respected monasteries in the region through donations, indulgence privileges, and shrewd land acquisition. It was the mother abbey for four other foundations: Waldsassen Abbey (1133), Reifenstein Abbey (1162), Loccum Abbey (1163), and Dobrilugk Abbey (1165) in Lower Lusatia. During the Thuringian War of Succession (1247–1264), the complex was fortified with a ring wall and towers for security. Towards the end of the 15th century, the monastery experienced a decline, marked by abuse of power by the abbots and conflicts with the local population. During the German Peasants' War, Volkenroda Abbey was plundered and partially destroyed by fire by rebellious peasants on April 27, 1525. The valuable library and works of art were lost. The dissolution and secularization of the monastery took place in 1540.

Volkenroda Abbey is situated in the Unstrut-Hainich district of Thuringia, Germany, at an elevation of approximately 281 meters above sea level.

After a long period of dissolution, the monastic complex was acquired in 1994 by the ecumenical Jesus-Brotherhood and significantly restored. Today, monastic life is once again practiced there, and the abbey serves as a venue for conferences and retreats. Since 2005, the property has been managed by the Volkenroda Abbey Foundation, which is dedicated to promoting Christian faith and spiritual, social, economic, cultural, and societal life.
