Utstein Abbey

Utstein's origins are closely linked to Harald Hårfagre's Battle of Hafrsfjord; it once served as one of his five royal estates in Southwest Norway. The monastery itself was likely constructed between 1263 and 1280 under Magnus Lagabøte and first documented in 1286. It housed approximately 20 to 30 monks and twice as many lay people who managed the prosperous monastic estate. In the 14th and 16th centuries, severe conflicts arose between the abbots and the bishops of Stavanger, with the fortified monastery being besieged and stormed multiple times. With the Reformation, Utstein was secularized, and the abbey church became a parish church in the 17th century. After 130 years as Danish crown property, the complex fell into disrepair before passing into private ownership in 1706. The Garmann family restored and rebuilt the structures, transforming Utstein into a significant Baroque estate. Further restorations followed in the 20th century, and today the monastery belongs to the Utstein Abbey Foundation.

Utstein Abbey is located on Klosterøy island in the municipality of Rennesøy, in the Rogaland district of the Westland (Vestlandet) region in Norway. It stands at an elevation of approximately 13 meters above sea level.

Today, Utstein Abbey functions as a museum, conference, and concert venue. Visitors can explore the well-preserved medieval building sections, including the church with its unique tower situated between the nave and chancel, the east wing with the library, and the south wing with the refectory and kitchen. All buildings were primarily constructed from soapstone.
