Urspring Abbey

The foundation of Urspring Monastery dates back to 1127, when the locality of Urspring, including its church, was transferred to St. Georgen Monastery in the Black Forest. Soon after, Benedictine nuns settled in Urspring, and the monastery evolved into a priory under the care of St. Georgen. The monastery's patronage was dedicated to Saint Ulrich. Following its destruction in the mid-13th century, the community recovered. Over the centuries, the monastery gained increasing independence from its mother house. Despite the Reformation and a later subordination to the Catholic abbot of St. Georgen, who resided in Villingen, the connection persisted. In 1806, Urspring Benedictine Monastery was dissolved as part of the secularization.

Urspring Monastery is situated in the Alb-Donau region of Baden-Württemberg, Germany, at an elevation of approximately 550 meters above sea level. It is located near the town of Schelklingen.

Today, the former monastery buildings house the Urspringschule, a boarding school. The preserved monastic structures, including the St. Ulrich Abbey Church and the priory, are listed as historical monuments and are included in the list of Schelklingen's architectural heritage. The abbey church was rebuilt after a fire in the 17th century, while the lower levels of the church tower are late medieval.
