Triefenstein Abbey

Monastic settlement in Triefenstein likely began in 1088 when the canon Gerung established himself near a chapel. The official founding of the Augustinian canons' foundation, dedicated to Saints Peter and Paul, occurred in 1102. This foundation received confirmation from Pope Calixtus II in 1123. The strategically advantageous location on the Main River, near a ford and a trade route, as well as its proximity to Neuenburg and abundant springs, contributed to the choice of site. The monastery gained freedom from Vogt rule and was directly subordinate to the Prince-Bishopric of Würzburg. Despite initial prosperity and holdings in numerous localities in the 15th century, Triefenstein lost influence due to the Counts of Wertheim and the Peasants' War in the 16th century. During the Thirty Years' War, the church was even used as a stable, and most of its interior was lost. After 1648, an economic recovery began, leading to extensive Baroque renovations starting in 1687, which shaped its current appearance. The collegiate church of St. Peter and Paul was built between 1687 and 1694, with two Romanesque choir flank towers being raised and fitted with Baroque domes. The monastery complex was secularized in 1803.

The monastery complex is located in the market town of Triefenstein in the Main-Spessart district, west of the Main River and above an old river crossing. It stands at an elevation of approximately 187 meters above sea level. The town of Lengfurt is situated across the Main River.

Today, the former Triefenstein Monastery serves as the main headquarters of the Protestant Christusträger-Bruderschaft.
