Trauntal Abbey

The origins of Kloster Trauntal date back to 1450, when the hermit Antonius von Siegenburg founded a hermitage with a chapel dedicated to Saint Nicholas. Over time, this developed into a monastery of the Tertiaries of the Franciscan Reformates. A remarkable cave church, featuring a natural rock roof, was newly constructed in 1603. This church is adorned with frescoes on its interior, though remnants of these are significantly damaged by weathering. The monastic community existed until its dissolution during the secularization in 1803.

The former Kloster Trauntal is located near Kelheim in Bavaria, Germany, nestled within the striking rock formations of the Danube Gorge. It sits at an elevation of approximately 350 meters above sea level and is accessible from Kelheim via a footpath.

Following the dissolution of the monastery, a guesthouse was established in the former hermitage in 1880. Known as “Klösterl,” it has been in operation, with interruptions, ever since. A visit to the historic chapel can be arranged by inquiring with the guesthouse proprietors.
