Thierhaupten Abbey

The foundation of Thierhaupten Monastery, dedicated to Saints Peter and Paul, is attributed to Duke Tassilo III of Bavaria around 800. In 955, the abbey suffered looting during the Hungarian invasions but was rebuilt and re-equipped by Gebhard I and Rapoto von Hohenwart. Further destruction occurred in 1504 by the Swabian League. As part of the secularization, the monastery was dissolved in 1803. The monastery buildings were auctioned off and passed into private ownership, while the monastery church was acquired by the last abbot for the parish in 1812. It was not until 1983 that the market town of Thierhaupten bought the complex back and initiated extensive renovation.

Thierhaupten Monastery is situated in the municipality of Thierhaupten in the Bavarian administrative district of Swabia, not far from the city of Augsburg. The complex is located at an elevation of approximately 442 meters above sea level.

The former monastery complex now serves various purposes. It houses a school for rural development, a branch office of the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation, and the Bavarian Building Archive with specialized workshops for monument preservation. The monastery courtyard is used as an event venue, and the former stables accommodate a restaurant. The original monastery church, a Romanesque basilica that was baroqueized around 1714, has been the Catholic parish church of St. Peter and Paul since 1809.
