St. George the Victorious Monastery

The monastery's origins date back to the 13th century, when the Kievan Prince Glozh, to whom Tsar Ivan Asen II granted the area, presumably had the “St. Preobrazhenie” Monastery and a small fortress built. This original monastery existed until the 17th century. In the early 18th century, monks built a new monastery, dedicated to Saint George the Victorious (Sveti Georgi Pobedonosets), on a high rock to protect themselves from Ottoman attacks. For a time, both monasteries were connected by a rock tunnel. In the late 18th and early 19th centuries, the monastery played an important role in enlightenment, establishing a small monastery and a cell school near Malak Izvor and in Lovech. The current monastic dwellings were built in 1858 on the foundations of older buildings. After the earthquakes of 1904 and 1913, the original monastery church was destroyed and rebuilt in 1931, incorporating the salvaged wooden iconostasis from the old church. According to legend, the church icon of Saint George was brought here by Prince Glozh from the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra.

The Sveti Georgi Pobedonosets Monastery is located near the village of Glozhene in the Teteven district, Lovech region, Bulgaria. It stands at an elevation of approximately 791 m above sea level.

Today, the monastery is an active male monastery and can be visited. It also offers accommodation to visitors in shared and private rooms.
