Kloster St. Stephan, Zeitz

The first mention of the monastery dates to 1147. In 1154, it was granted patronage over St. Michael's Church. For a period between 1185 and 1192, Augustinian canons were also present at St. Stephan's Church. Due to the Saxon Fratricidal War, the monastery was relocated to the upper town around 1446, where it was adjoined to St. Michael's Church. Convent buildings were erected north of the church. In 1517, the complex was expanded by adding a story to the cloister buildings and constructing a separate chapel northwest of the church. The Reformation led to the first Protestant sermon in St. Michael's Church in 1537. Finally, St. Stephan's Monastery was dissolved in 1541, while St. Michael's Church continued to function as a Protestant parish church.

St. Stephan's Monastery was situated in Zeitz, a town in the Burgenlandkreis district of Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. Originally located outside the medieval city at St. Stephan's Church, it was later moved to the upper town next to St. Michael's Church.

The current Protestant St. Stephan's Church was rebuilt between 1739 and 1741, incorporating older structural elements. It presents itself as a simple hall church with a three-sided chancel and a west tower crowned by a baroque top with a lantern. Inside, mirrored ceilings and two-story galleries define the space. Notable furnishings include a pulpit altar with Corinthian columns, an organ facade, and a wooden baptismal font, attributed to the Gera sculptor Johann Wilhelm Rockstock. Furthermore, the church houses a late Gothic carved figure of Saint Stephen from the 15th century, a shrine of Anna Selbdritt, and an altar crucifix from the 16th century. The neo-Gothic church pews are a donation from the 19th century.
