St. Stephan Abbey

The canonesses' convent of St. Stephan was founded in 969. A church dedicated to Saint Stephen already stood on this site, built on Roman foundations. The originally three-aisled pillar basilica underwent several reconstructions after fires. In the 12th century, St. Stephan established itself as an independent parish, which was incorporated into the convent of noblewomen in 1310. In 1459, a fire destroyed the church roof, after which the windows and vaults were renewed in Gothic style. In the 17th century, the church was adapted to the Renaissance style, and in the mid-18th century, an extensive Rococo renovation took place under Abbess Beata von Welden, led by Franz Xaver Kleinhans. In the course of secularization, the monastery was dissolved in 1803. The parish of St. Stephan was dissolved in 1809 or 1810. From 1835, Benedictine monks moved into the re-established monastery complex. During an air raid in February 1944, the entire complex was completely destroyed. The church was rebuilt by 1966, largely restoring its exterior, but with a modern and simple interior design.

The St. Stephan Monastery is located in the city of Augsburg in Bavaria, Germany, at an elevation of approximately 486 meters above sea level.

The St. Stephan Abbey Church now serves as a Benedictine abbey church. Its interior features modern simplicity and a flat beamed ceiling. A few preserved sculptural figures and a late Gothic crucifix from 1495 adorn the building. Numerous tomb slabs from the 14th and 15th centuries can be found in the ambulatory.
