Mauritiuskloster Minden

The St. Mauritius Monastery is a historic sacred building in Minden-Lübbecke, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. It was originally founded by Benedictine monks and boasts a long history marked by its unusual location and various challenges.

History+

The Benedictine monastery of St. Mauritius was founded in 1042 by Bishop Bruno von Waldeck of Minden. Initially, it was situated on an island in the Weser river, strategically positioned to secure a ford. This early settlement significantly contributed to the development of the Right Weser Bank district. In the 14th century, clay for brick production was extracted from monastic land, which is considered an early testament to urban brick manufacturing. Due to threats from floods and raids, the monastery was relocated in 1434 to its current site on the opposite bank of the Weser, next to St. Simeon's Church, which simultaneously became both a parish and monastic church. In 1475, St. Mauritius Church was consecrated as a separate oratory, and the remains of its founder, Bishop Bruno, were transferred there. After initial difficulties, the monastery joined the Bursfelde Congregation in 1464, initiating a period of prosperity. During the Reformation, the monks were forced to flee multiple times, and the monastery faced financial hardship. In 1696, the impoverished monastery was incorporated into Huysburg Abbey and continued as a priory until its dissolution by a decree from King Jérôme in 1810.
