Kloster St. Lioba

The St. Lioba Monastery is a significant Benedictine institution in Baden-Württemberg, located in the Günterstal district of Freiburg. It serves as the motherhouse for the Benedictine Sisters of St. Lioba and is housed in the former Villa Wohlgemuth, situated on the edge of the Freiburg city forest. The complex is notable for its architectural design in the style of a Tuscan villa.
History+
The origins of the Lioba Sisters date back to 1920, when sisters from a children's hospital in Freiburg formed a spiritual community following the Rule of St. Benedict. The community was named after St. Lioba, a relative of St. Boniface. Initially located in the Neuburg district of Freiburg, the sisters chose tasks in pastoral care, nursing, and teaching, which is why they do not live in strict enclosure to this day. Due to the growing need for space, the sisters acquired Villa Wohlgemuth in Günterstal in 1927. In the same year, the papal recognition as a congregation of the Benedictine order was granted. The sisters are involved in educational, social, and ecclesiastical fields and cultivate liturgical chant. Since 2021, Dominican sisters from the dissolved Neusatzeck Monastery have also been living in the community.

The property also includes utility buildings, gardens, the St. Benedict guesthouse, a monastery shop, a biblical monastery garden, and a cemetery for the nuns. In Haus Subiaco, a smaller building across the street, an Edith Stein Memorial Room has been located since 2001, commemorating the saint's visits.
