Kloster St. Alban

The origins of the monastic community date back to 1923, when Baroness Barbara von Freyberg, known as Sister Annuntiata, laid the foundation in the premises of a former inn. After her work in the reserve hospital of St. Ottilien Archabbey during World War I, she dedicated herself to taking in children. The group, initially known as the Guardian Angel Sisters, cared for fifteen children by Lake Ammersee. The property's name is derived from the nearby St. Alban's Church, whose history dates back to the late 15th century. The early development of the community was hampered by the death of its founder at just 48 years old and the ban on accepting novices imposed by the National Socialists. It was not until 1946 that new novices could be admitted again through St. Ottilien Monastery. From 1954, at the suggestion of Bishop Aurelian Bilgeri, the sisters became involved in missions in South Africa, founding their own diocesan congregation there in 1957. The current monastery building was constructed between 1962 and 1964 and was declared an independent priory in 1966.

St. Alban Monastery is located in Landsberg, in the federal state of Bavaria, Germany. It is situated in the St. Alban district of the municipality of Dießen am Ammersee.

The monastic community currently operates a children's home and continues its social and missionary work.
