History+

The Augustinian Canons' Collegiate Church of St. Afra was founded in 1205 by Bishop Dietrich II of Kittlitz. The Augustinian Canons who settled here likely came from other monasteries in the region. A school was affiliated with the monastery early on. In the course of the Reformation, implemented in Saxony from 1539, the monastery was dissolved. The monastic properties were handed over to the territorial rulers in 1540. In 1543, Elector Moritz established the first princely and state school in Saxony within the former monastery buildings, which was named St. Afra. The monastery church became a parish and school church. Since 1991, the buildings have also housed the Evangelical Academy of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Saxony.
